Under 21 B Championship Final
Report by John Mc Eniff
Bundoran 3-8 Sean MacCumhaills 1-3
The 2009 u-21 B championship has found its way to Bundoran. It was fourth time lucky for Pat Walsh who had seen his team fall at the final hurdle in this competition in each of last three years. Despite the emphatic nature of the score-line it was the final quarter before Bundoran shook off a tenacious and committed MacCumhaill’s challenge. Bundoran, though, were stronger through most areas of the pitch and while the twin town’s side had the margin back to four points with fifteen minutes to go, the Seasiders moved up a gear and hit an unanswered 1-4 to close out the game.
MacCumhaill’s started the game without their senior star Stephen O’Reilly. Darren Brown took his allotted position at full-forward and John Lynch moved to the middle of the park. From the outset Bundoran were on the attack, Darragh Hoey going close and then Chris Patton pulling off a good save from Jonathan McHale. Jonny Ward won the break from the resultant 45m and lofted over the game’s opening score. The Bundoran corner-forward also bagged the game’s opening goal three minutes later, running onto a pass from Shane Moohan and firing the ball to the corner of the net. Bundoran were well on top at this stage with Ward particularly prominent, but they were not making it count on the scoreboard with two kickable frees and a 45 unconverted. MacCumhaills on the other hand were making no headway, particularly upfront. Any balls that found their way into their full forward line were won by Bundoran with Gavin Croghan, Ryan Walsh and Diarmuid McCaughey winning all the early battles for possession. It was the end of the first quarter before MacCumhaills finally got a shot at the target – Darren O’Leary winning a free which Brian Patton converted. Bundoran responded well with Ward setting up Ashley Mulhern, whose point moved the margin back out to four, and when Mulhern returned the compliment minutes later Ward’s low drive went wide.
MacCumhaills were finally beginning to make some headway, John Doherty recording their first wide on the twenty minute mark. Shortly after Kevin McManus, in the Bundoran goal, had to get down smartly to turn Chris McDaid’s shot around the post. O’Leary pointed a 50 m free to reduce the margin to a goal a score-line that did not reflect Bundoran’s early dominance. However, in the last five minutes of the half, Bundoran found their shooting boots to double their score and go into the break winning by 2-4 to 0-2. The first of these scores came from a turnover when Ciaran Gunn dispossessed Darren McGowan around the middle of the park. Bundoran’s McHale secured the ball and went on a strong 30 m run before being hauled down and Ward converted the free. Patton then saved from Moohan, but a sideline ball into the danger area was well fielded by Ciaran McCaughey who cleverly fed Darragh Hoey and the centre forward gave Patton no chance with a blistering drive for Bundoran’s second goal. McCaughey followed up with a well taken point and an eight point deficit for MacCumhaills to re-motivate themselves with during the break.
Stephen O’Reilly replaced Lee Henderson at the break but he had little immediate impact with Bundoran looking more comfortable in the early minutes. MacCumhaills were not going to relinquish their title easily though. Darren Brown hit the post on six minutes, Packie Gallen had an opportunity from the rebound but McManus saved well. O’Leary pointed the resultant 45 and the twin town’s side were visibly lifted. A turnaround looked on the books five minutes later when O’Leary’s strong run ended with a shot to the top left-hand corner of the net and the margin was back to four points, 2-4 to 1-3. The goal was their first score from play and while it also turned out to be their last it was not for want of effort.
Rossa McKiernan started the Bundoran comeback, breaking forward to take a pass from Shane McGowan and dissecting the posts from distance. Darren Brown posted a wide and then McManus saved well from Brian Patton. Michael McEniff replaced the injured Ciaran Gunn on the three-quarter mark and quickly got his name on the score-board taking a pass from Shane Moohan and pointing from a difficult angle. The margin was back out to six points and while it didn’t deflate MacCumhaills it calmed Bundoran nerves. On twenty minutes a hospital pass to Ashley Mulhern saw the young minor flattened and Darragh Hoey stepped up to convert what was a tricky spot kick. He had an easier job five minutes later when Jonathan McHale was fouled and MacCumhaill’s grip on the silverware was getting looser. It was almost prised off minutes later. McKiernan broke up a MacCumhaills attack, fed Peter McGonigle who ran 30 metres before passing to Ward. He unselfishly squared the ball to McEniff who stepped inside an off-balance Grindle and slotted the ball home. The game ended in thundering hailstones with the twin town’s team gamely attacking the Bundoran goal, but it was the Seasiders who were the deserving victors and in truth they were much the better side on the day.
The spine of the Bundoran team were very strong throughout and best for Bundoran were captain Shane McGowan, Diarmuid McCaughey, Adam Dunmore and the two Jonathans – McHale and Ward. That said, however, it was a very good team performance and MacCumhaills were unfortunate to meet a Bundoran side where not a single player had an off-day and as a team functioned very well. The fact that they only conceded a single score from play is indicative of how well they defended as a unit. For the losers, Gerard Grindle. John Lynch, Darren McGowan and John Doherty played well, while Darren O’Leary really caught the eye with a never-say-die performance. Terence McGinley presented the trophy on behalf of the county board, thanking Four Masters for the use of the pitch and the officials for a well-officiated match. While the hits were hard and a couple of flashpoints emerged, referee Tony Gallagher and his linesmen Terence McShea and Shaun Campbell always had what was a free-flowing game well under control.
